Some labels are just labels. This one is a family.
This is an original New Old Stock label for Ghianda Winery Brand California Wine Sherry, bottled by A. Ghianda Winery, Feather Ave., Thermalito, California — circa 1940s. Never used, never attached to a bottle. One available.
This is a label only. No frame is included. It is suitable for framing and we recommend doing so to preserve its condition.
The label is quiet and unhurried — muted burgundy, brown, red, and black, with a touch of olive green standing in for gilding, which was an expense few small wineries bothered with in those days. Wine was not yet the high-status industry it would become. The design reflects that: honest, unfussy, rooted. Look closely and you'll find Delia's initials worked into it — a small gesture of devotion pressed into the paper alongside the winery name.
The story behind it is worth knowing. Americo Camerino Ghianda came to the United States alone at the age of 14, an Italian immigrant boy who went to work in his uncle's Sacramento fruit store. He became an authority in the California fruit industry, married Delia, raised four children, and built a 100-acre ranch where he grew oranges, olives, figs, and grapes. In 1935 he established A. Ghianda Winery in Thermalito, near Oroville. He died in 1938; his son Joseph carried it on. Records show the winery still operating as late as 1974. Joseph passed in 1995. The home eventually went to ruin. This label is what remains — found through long-time dealer Lorie Cairns, and now here. Guaranteed genuine original, not a reproduction.
Frame it for a kitchen, a wine room, a farmhouse-style interior, or anywhere that welcomes the quiet beauty of California's early wine country.
A wonderful gift for a California history enthusiast, a wine collector, a lover of farmhouse or country décor, or anyone drawn to the stories that ordinary objects carry.
